From Writing The Big Book by William Schaberg, Page 328:

Dr. Bob Smith was showing these chapters [rough drafts sent from New York] only to those who were in favor of the book being written and he was conducting those review sessions in the privacy of these members homes. Those who were categorically opposed to the project were being left out of the review loop. And of those who did get a chance to read the chapters, none of them ever offered any significant changes or made substantive constructive criticisms of what they were reading.

As Bill Wilson so neatly summed up the so-called Akron review process: "the chapters of the book were sent to [Dr. Bob Smith] for debate and inspection out there [but] he never passed them around very much, merely writing me saying he thought they were all right."

No Direction From Dr. Bob

This lack of any widespread or critical review was evident in the comments Dr. Bob offered in his response just four or five days after receiving these five chapters, telling Bill he was basically happy with everything that had been written so far. Wilson was expecting much more feedback than this and he was disappointed that the larger contingent of the A.A. Fellowship was completely uninterested in generating any serious criticism for these five important chapters of the book [Chapters 1 - 4, and possibly Working With Others, according to Schaberg - Jim B.]. Bill had made it clear he felt his writings needed significant revision or at least some help with polishing, and this obvious lack of engagement by everyone in Akron must have been quite frustrating for him. A little direction, at least from Bob himself, would have been appreciated., but his tentative nod of acceptance was clearly the most Bill could expect to get from Ohio. Despite his repeated request for checking and criticism of the proposed chapters, Akron offered him "nothing but the warmest support."
