A Book of Recovery is a free, anonymous personal memoir featuring an account of increasing alcoholism and mental and emotional decline, leading to membership in AA and recovery from alcoholism. It includes a detailed account of taking the Steps, going to meetings, service and analysis of the Big Book and Twelve and Twelve. Stories of living the sober life in and out of meetings can be found at the end.
Here is an excerpt:
I spent a great deal of time writing down what I have learned for those who want to read it. I did it for four reasons:
1. To disclose in a detailed way what it used to be like,
what happened and what it is like now.
2. To describe what our literature says about alcoholism
and the program of recovery.
3. To show what our literature does not say.
4. To recount things I've learned after recovering and still hope
to learn
Stories in the Big Book, including Bill's, usually concentrate on ‘what it was like’ in order for the newcomer to identify as an alcoholic and, it is hoped, become a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. In other words, there is normally a great deal of drinking history and sometimes drugging as well, but often not much time is spent on actually working the Steps and trying to live by spiritual principles after recovery. This is well suited to beginners, but what about those of who have already recovered? This book spends a great deal more time telling ‘what happened’ and ‘what it's like now.’ It presents a story of active alcoholism, but also a personal and detailed account of working AA's program of recovery and the new life sobriety and spiritual principles make possible.
